Trailing 13-17 and facing a 4th-and-1, Super Bowl MVP John Riggins broke off a 43-yard touchdown run to give Washington the lead in the Super Bowl. One touchdown later they had sealed the game and Washington had its first Super Bowl title.

Washington set a number of Super Bowl records in their thrashing of the Broncos in Super Bowl XXII. Super Bowl MVP Doug Williams set a record throwing 4 TD passes in one quarter as Washington went on a 42-0 scoring run, which included 35 points scored in the 2nd quarter, another record.

The 1st play of the 3rd quarter was a Washington interception by Kurt Gouveia, who returned it 23 yds to Buffalo’s 2-yard line. One play later, Gerald Riggs scored his 2nd touchdown of the game. Washington’s 24-0 lead midway through the 3rd quarter is the largest shutout lead in Super Bowl history.
