The Montreal Expos were Canada’s first foray into Major League Baseball at the National League level. However, Montreal was not new to baseball, as the Montreal Royals, both in their initial iteration in the early 1900s and later their return as a farm team for the Brooklyn Dodgers, were immensely popular – no doubt in large part by their star player, Jackie Robinson.
The Montreal Expos were aptly named after the 1967 National Exhibition, “Expo ’67”. They entered the league for the 1969 season playing out of Jarry Park in the north end of Montreal until their move into Olympic Stadium in 1977 – coincidentally also the first year for the Toronto Blue Jays. The Expos would go on to win one East Division title in 1981, and many believe they were destined for a World Series birth in 1994, prior to the season’s abrupt end due to the player strike.
Unfortunately, a struggling team combined with an equally struggling economy and ownership change brought immense change, with the team eventually being relocated to Washington and now renamed the Nationals, for the 2005 season.
