The University of Kentucky’s Ralph Beard and Arnold Ferrin of the University of Utah battle it out on the January 1948 cover of the SPORT Magazine. Another controversial figure in college basketball, Beard was a three-time All-American, two-time NCAA Champion, an Olympic Gold Medalist and an NBA All-Star, but was also a key figure in the 1948-49 point-shaving scandal that saw himself and teammates Alex Groza and Dale Barnstable be banned from the NBA for life. On the other hand, Ferrin was a four-time All-AMerican and would go on to win two NBA Championships with the Minneapolis Lakers.
SPORT Magazine, which ran from 1946 to 2000, celebrated what its editors accurately anticipated would be the coming explosion of interest in professional and amateur sport in post-war North America.
