After Dave Roberts’ steal in the 9th, Boston and New York both went scoreless into the 12th. Cut to the bottom of the 12th. David Ortiz, the greatest clutch-hitter in the history of the Boston, steps to the plate. On the 4th pitch, Ortiz took Paul Quantrill long, hitting a 2-run walk off home run to buy Boston another game in the series. Boston went on to beat New York in 7 and then to win their first World Series in 86 years, sweeping Saint Louis in 4 games.

Boston’s ninth World Series title, it was lead by a dominant Game 5 by Pearce whose 1st inning homer off Kershaw put Boston up 2-0 and then he cemented the win with a solo homer in the 8th, earning MVP in doing so

Boston was facing a sweep in the ALCS by arch rival New York. No team had ever come back from a 0 – 3 deficit to win in 7. New York was leading by one run going in to the bottom of the ninth and infamous Mariano Rivera came in for the save. Kevin Millar stepped to the plate for Boston drew a walk, but Boston needed someone in scoring position so they sent Dave Roberts in to steal second. On the very first pitch after he came in Roberts took off running and was safe at second. Mueller later singled allowing Roberts to score, send the game into extra innings, and give Rivera one of his few blown saves.

Boston trailing a game in the World Series 1 – 2, and going in to the sixth were engaged in a tight game that had the score tied at 1 apiece. The first two batters went down but that only fueled Boston to start a 2 out rally. Dustin Pedroia singled and David Ortiz walked to bring Jonny Gomes up to the plate. Gomes 3 run home run gave Boston a comfortable lead, leading them to knot the series at 2 games each.
