Lou Gehrig, born Henry Louis Gehrig, is one of the greatest ironmen to ever step on the field. Beginning his professional career in 1925 after Yankees first baseman Wally Pipp sat out a game due to a headache, Gehrig and the Yankees organization would never look back. Gehrig played 2,130 consecutive games for the Yankees, compiling 13 consecutive seasons scoring 100 or more runs and eight 200-hit seasons. His ironman streak, which many believed to be unbeatable, was only surpassed by the modern day iron man himself, Cal Ripkin, Jr.
The American League’s All-Star First Baseman for the first seven All-Star Games, Gehrig was also a frequent league-leader in several different statistical categories, including runs scored (4 times), home runs (3 times), RBIs (5 times), on-base percentage (5 times), and batting average (1 time). He set the American League single-season record for Runs Batted In (RBIs) with an amazing 185RBIs – while also hitting behind Babe Ruth (who had 162 of his own)! His ability to remain a statistical marvel for the entirety of his career is a testament to his unbelievable talent, highlighted by his remarkable 1934 season in which he earned the Triple Crown (leading the Majors in batting average, home runs, and RBIs) – one of baseballs’ rarest achievements – batting .363 with 49 home runs and 166 RBIs.
The Yankee captain’s career would come to an abrupt and unfortunate end due to a mysterious neuromuscular disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), which would become known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. His tragic death in 1941 marked the end of an era in baseball and an immeasurable loss to the baseball community.
Gehrig would later be voted the greatest First Baseman of all time in 1969 by the Baseball Writers Association of America, and was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1939. Finally, he was the leading receiver of votes for the all-century team conducted by Major League Baseball.
